The Urease Test or breath test is performed when a stomach infection is suspected due to the bacteria called Helicobacter Pylori.
This bacteria is found in the walls of the stomach and survives in an acidic environment thanks to an enzyme called urease. This enzyme converts urea into basic products that react with the acid and maintain a microenvironment with a pH suitable for the survival of H.Pylori.
It is the bacteria responsible for most cases of duodenal and stomach ulcers, chronic gastritis, and stomach cancer.
