Asbestos fibre and other fibre count in air by phase contrast optical microscopy, according to method MTA/MA-051/A04. Applicable to environmental measurements, controls during material handling, and post-intervention verifications.

With the asbestos VLA-ED set at 0.01 fibres/cm³, compliance verification according to UNE-EN 689 requires quantification down to 10% of that value (0.001 fibres/cm³). In personal sampling or clean areas where this threshold must be reached, SEM-EDS analysis (ISO 14966:2019) is the recommended technique.
