Galectin-3 is a protein involved in chronic inflammation, tissue fibrosis and cellular remodeling processes, related to immune activation and extracellular matrix deposition. Its circulating levels may reflect fibrogenic processes and progressive organ damage, and it has become established as a relevant biomarker in heart failure and cardiovascular remodeling.
Its measurement provides useful information on fibrosis and systemic inflammation processes, complementing other markers in the assessment of cardiometabolic risk and the progression of chronic diseases.
The measurement of Galectin-3 provides relevant information in the context of:
- Cardiovascular health: heart failure, myocardial remodeling and cardiovascular risk stratification.
- Tissue fibrosis processes: cardiac, renal or hepatic fibrosis and extracellular matrix remodeling processes.
- Chronic inflammation and integrative medicine: persistent inflammatory processes, cardiometabolic risk assessment and evaluation of progressive tissue damage.
The result of this marker allows assessment of fibrogenic and chronic inflammatory process activity, always integrated with the patient’s clinical presentation and other analytical parameters.
